1. Materials: Development or advancement of technologies for production of value-added products from sustainably sourced biomass
SKZ has been involved in various bioeconomy projects to develop sustainable solutions. In addition to the selection of suitable materials and the creation of suitable formulations, a wide range of process and processing equipment is available in our technical center for material development as well as a wide range of analyses and processing options, including material analyses (rheological and thermal analyses), compounding behavior, extrudability and injection moldability, determination of suitable welding parameters, statements on bondability, surface pretreatment, additive manufacturing (FDM). We would be highly interested to participate in research areas for biobased material solutions and their respective process requirements in different applications. We are also able to contribute with sustainability analysis such as LCA and life-cycle assessment (LCA) for Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) and bring in competencies in the field of data acquisition and processing with broad expertise in production technology.
For more than 60 years, the SKZ - German Plastic Center has been dedicated to research and development, testing, training and further education of specialists and managers, as well as the certification of management systems in the field of plastics. As a non-university research institution with more than 110 scientific staff in 17 research groups, SKZ addresses all important research topics related to plastics – from materials to processing to quality assurance, including the topics of digitalization as well as sustainability and circular economy – and is currently working on more than 100 publicly funded national and international research projects per year.
Together with the excellent mechanical equipment in our own technical centres, this also supports a diverse and very practical technology transfer through professional training, conference and networking activities. Every year, for example, more than 10,000 participants take advantage of these SKZ information services at six locations in Germany and at in-house training courses worldwide.
